The Scottish Highlands
The Scottish Highlands refers to the area north and west of the Highland Boundary Fault and was the Gaelic-speaking portion of Scotland. Scotland is divided by the Highlands and the Lowlands. The Highland area currently has very little population with numerous mountain ranges.
Prior to the 19th century, the Highlands had a much larger populace. The British outlawed the traditional Highland Clan way of life after the Jacobite uprising of 1745. Also the Highland Clearances which evicted most of the population in the 18th and 19th centuries. They evicted all families living in and entire glen. The change from farming to industrialization also impacted the population.
The Highlands also served as the location for many movies such as my favorite “Highlander”. You can see the battle scene below that was filmed near the mountain Buachaille Etive Beag at the eastern end of Glen Coe.
