Powerscourt Estate is a rather large country estate located in Enniskerry, County Wicklow. The estate is well known for its lavishly landscaped and manicured gardens. Overall the property is about 47 acres in size. The estate home was originally a 13th century castle. It has been modified substantially since that time even enduring a fire in 1974 that left only a shell of it’s formal self until it underwent major renovation in 1996.
Don’t get me wrong, this is definitely a must see location, but the house itself was vastly different from what I was expecting. While it was renovated, it was renovated to act more as a mini shopping mall than a stately home. There are several stores within, restaurants and some areas that were renovated into a corporate and social event space.
The real draw of this estate is the gardens and the majestic beauty of the location and the Wicklow Mountain views. You will not be disappointed.
My attraction to this location was that is was featured prominently in the movie, “The Count of Monte Cristo”. It was the site of many other films as well.
The Italian Garden
The Gates and other Gardens
Once again many of my favorite stops have something to with movies and Powerscourt is no exception. There have been over 25 different feature films and TV series shot at Powerscourt.
One of the most notable was the Count of Monte Cristo (2002) featuring Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce.
