Edinburgh Castle, perched high atop the city of Edinburgh. This castle can be seen from almost every corner of the city from it’s position atop Castle Rock. Archeologists suggest that humans have inhabited this area since the early 2nd century AD. There has been a royal castle in this location since the 12th century and it was a royal residence until 1633.
Edinburgh Castle was one of the most important strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland. The castle was involved in the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 1th century all the way up to the Jacobite Rising of 1745. Research completed in 2014 identified 26 sieges that the castle was involved in during its 1100 year history.
The oldest remaining building on the stronghold property is St. Margaret’s Chapel. It has been around since the early 12th century. It is considered the oldest building in Edinburgh.
